Ten years ago, ‘Presque Rien n°1’ bore the subtitle “Sunrise at the Seaside”. This piece of magnetic tape was in fact a sort of report on this daily event. Thinking about Presque Rien later on, I wondered what it was about. Looking for almost nothing, I realized that it wasn't easy to find. We think we're going to find it somewhere, but no.
A “presque rien” [almost nothing] is a (that is to say, not two) homogeneous, natural, non-urban place with particular acoustic qualities (transparency and depth) where you can hear both near and far well enough. It's fit for the ear —or as they say, fit for humans. Without technology. Nothing is dominant, so that each of the different sonic inhabitants have their say and this little life-world's multiple layers make up nothing more than an almost nothing.
Or the opposite of sensational.
And then, something happens and takes up space.
‘Presque Rien n°2’ is a place like this, a night-time place that gets into my head bit by bit.

• Premiered on 14 November 1979 during Festival d’Automne at Centre Pompidou – Paris.
A “presque rien” [almost nothing] is a (that is to say, not two) homogeneous, natural, non-urban place with particular acoustic qualities (transparency and depth) where you can hear both near and far well enough. It's fit for the ear —or as they say, fit for humans. Without technology. Nothing is dominant, so that each of the different sonic inhabitants have their say and this little life-world's multiple layers make up nothing more than an almost nothing.

Il y a dix ans, ‘Presque Rien n°1’ portait le sous-titre “Le lever du jour au bord de la mer”. Ce morceau de bande magnétique était en fait une sorte de reportage sur cet événement quotidien. En pensant ensuite à Presque Rien, je me suis demandé de quoi il s’agissait. En cherchant presque rien je me suis rendu compte qu’il n’était pas facile d’en trouver, on pense qu’on va en trouver ici ou là, mais non.
Un presque rien est un (c’est-à-dire pas deux) lieu homogène et naturel, non urbain, qui a des qualités acoustiques particulières (transparence et profondeur), où on entend loin et près sans excès, à l’échelle de l’oreille —comme on dit— à l’échelle humaine, sans technologie, où rien n’est dominant afin que les différents habitants sonores aient chacun leur parole et que la superposition de ce petit monde de vie ne fasse jamais qu’un presque rien.
Ou le contraire du sensationnel.
Puis, quelque chose arrive et prend de la place.
