What sounds incite the sensory and mental ecstasy that continue to guide the young Hamish Hossain in his “unending rite of passage”? Having moved to France in 2010 to pursue studies in music and sound composition, he speaks of being fascinated at an early age by sound, be it music, signals, cries or noises, and the space within which it unfolds. His childhood neighborhood of Tatibagan, Kolkata, became his place of enlightenment and observation. His parents’ house, his school where he discovered the piano; his cat, the street, the neighbors, the town criers, the dogs and the crows, the rickshaws and tuk-tuks, the trains and street vendors. Having never been to India, Denis Dufour has re-imagined Kolkata’s sonic environment based on Hamish’s stories, a few sounds recorded on his brother Razi’s phone, and videos on the internet. Quels sons provoquèrent chez le tout jeune Hamish Hossain l’extase sensorielle et intellectuelle qui continue de le guider dans son « perpétuel voyage initiatique » ? Installé en France depuis 2010 afin d’y étudier la création musicale et sonore, il parle de son attrait précoce pour le son, qu’il soit musique, signal, cri ou bruit, et l’espace dans lequel il se déploie. Tatibagan, quartier de son enfance à Kolkata, fut son terrain d’éveil et d’observation : la maison de ses parents, l’école où il découvrit le piano, son chat, la rue, les voisins, les crieurs de rue, les chiens et les corbeaux, les rickshaws et les tuk-tuks, les trains et les marchands ambulants. N’étant jamais allé en Inde, Denis Dufour a imaginé l’environnement sonore de Kolkata à partir du récit de Hamish, de quelques sons captés sur un téléphone portable par son frère Razi et des vidéos qu’il a visionnées sur Internet. With his morphological and expressive approach to sound, Denis Dufour works on pieces in a state of constant renewal, on ideas that are specific to each piece. The resultant work is like a large fresco in which no themes sound alike, one goes through varied and breathtaking soundscapes, appreciating the sheer imagination though the consistency of his style. By deliberately but effortlessly having his music open to all sounds, Denis Dufour’s approach is that of liberty, independence and diligence. His craftsmanship, very French, is exquisite and mastered; every second of sound is enveloped by a supra-conscious ear, so that his work contains no trace of automatic tools.
